In which I witness a volunteer love story in Haiti and how it turned out.

When I was in Haiti, my compound was headed up by three volunteers who had been there since the compound was established a few months earlier. Like kids at summer camp pair up their counselors, my cohort decided that two of them were secretly a couple, and if they weren’t, well, maybe they should be.

I went home. Shortly after that, the compound closed in Jacmel. Everyone had returned to their origin point. That was in 2010.

Some time between then and now, she moved across the country to join him. Now they have a baby! He’s gorgeous. And I’m glad I met his parents when they were in the beginning of their love story.

(And my inner summer camper feels so vindicated!)
